Veliki Risnjak - a snow paradox

Because snow has mostly been avoiding Slovenian mountains throughout this winter, Artac and I decided to visit the Croatian highlands and capitalize on a strange snow paradox. Until now I was always traveling to Croatia for the summer holidays at the coast, however, this February our southern neighbors were blessed with more snow than most parts of Slovenia. There were even news of people skiing on Mediteranian islands like Cres and Lošinj.

So about 10 days ago we joined forces with Mladen, my coworker who is coming from this area, to attack Veliki Risnjak (1528m). I cannot say this is the best mountain for skiing, however, it proved to be a great adventure in thick forests, which are home to bears, wolves and wild cats. Besides a great view of the sea and tankers docking in Rijeka, we also skied past Tito's hunting lodge, which he used for stalking wild chickenks. It was interesting to find that the locals speak a special dialect, which is actually closer to Slovenian than Croatian language. Overall, Artac and I were very satisfied and have decided to come back during the summer to bike over these completely intact Croatian highlands.
