Verona and Monte Rosa!

Last week Ana and I decided to take a quick vacation and say goodbye to a very short winter season. The plan was to visit the famous and futuristic Monte Rosa Hutte (2884m), which is located high in the Swiss Alps and surrounded by a whole family of 4000-meter peaks.

We decided to split the long drive to Zermatt by sleeping over in Verona - the city of Romeo and Juliet. There we celebrated our 4th anniversary, enjoyed evening romantics in the old town and.. ok I can't tell you everything.

Early next morning we set-off towards Tasch, where we boarded the train to Zermatt and later to the ski station Rottenbonden (2815m). From there we reached the Monte Rosa Hutte (2884m) in about three hours. We knew the hut is very nice, modernistic and almost completely energy efficient, however, it offered us luxuries we simply didn't expect:
-   buffet breakfast,
-   4 course dinner,
-   unlimited tea, included in the price,
-   warm showers,
-   fresh pillows and blankets.

After a good night's sleep, it was time to do something more serious. I bought a topographic map in Zermatt and quickly realized the possibilities are almost infinite. Because of poor acclimatization, we did not attack the highest Monte Rosa peak - Duforspitze (4634m). The plan was to climb the long glacier towards the Italian border and to see how high we could reach. Ana was a little slower with her snow shoes and therefore decided to wait for me around 4000m high. I continued towards the Seserjoch pass (4296m). There I could really start to feel the effects of high altitude and finished my trip. The ski descent was marvelous, as there was nothing but powder above 3000m.

On the last day we descended down a long but very beautiful glacier, which later connects to the ski-pists above Zermatt. It was such a long march, that even Ana started thinking about switching her favorite snow shoes for skies in the next season. Tired but not beaten, we had hours and hours to talk about our adventure as we drove back to Slovenia.. back to spring in all its colors.
