Ljubljana swamp - as it once was.

Much of the Ljubljana basin is actually a big swampy area (Barje), which is why the city inhabitants are many times mocked as "frogers" (žabarji). Over the last centuries, channels were dug and the swamp was slowly dried out for agricultural purposes. However, many thousand years ago, Barje was submerged below water and inhabited by Koliščarji (tribes living in houses built on wooden pillars - picture above). Heavy rainfall three weeks ago, which caused very unpleasant floods all over Slovenia, once again flooded Barje - turning it into a big lake. First, Ana and I made a beautiful biking trip across the water. While Damjan also didn't wait long to borrow a long canoe, and called Andraž and me to join in on the action. We canoed all the way to Bistra, and then caught the (Ljubljanica) current back home. It was a good paddling recreation, capitalized by swimming and drinking beer at the sunset. But most important of all, we explored Barje just like our great forefathers.
