Snežnik - The giant of the South!

Snežnik (1796m) is actually the highest Slovenian mountain, which is not part of the Alps. It stands high above Ilirska Bistrica (a town where I spent the first three years of my life:) and is only a gun shot away from the Adriatic sea. The mixing of hot and cold air makes a perfect combination for hostile weather conditions, while extreme wind (burja) is the local specialty. Early spring is usually the best time to ski this mountain - and that is exactly what we did! It was a very unique experience skiing powder in the karst (limestone) landscape, covered with low and wind-resistant piners. After we returned to Sviščaki, a small ski resort at around 1300m, it was not easy to say goodbye to this true "giant of the South!"
