We had ambitious ski-touring plans between Christmas and New Year; however, they were literarily washed away by rain, which was rather unusual for December. It rained up to 2000 meters, minimizing the quantity of snow in the mountains. To make things even worse, it then snowed on top of this icy layer. What was the result? Snow was lacking below 1500m, while it proved to be extremely dangerous in higher areas. In the end we decided to climb Bohinjska vratca (1973m), where the analysis of unstable snow layers (see picture above) forced us to abolish our further intensions. We had a great time in Vodnikov dom (1817m), where we drank snaps liqueur (orehovec) and played board games long through the night. Next morning we explored Velo polje, a picturesque meadow below the hut, and after having lunch, skied back to the valley of Krma. Hopefully winter comes back and saves a very poor start of the ski-touring season.
